Citizen feedback sought as Sturgeon Bay Utilities tests energy efficient streetlights (6/5/09)

Sturgeon Bay Utilities is testing several new types of streetlights, and local residents are being asked to help.

The utility is evaluating the new lights, located from 827 Michigan St. to the intersection of 12th and Michigan St., for their potential energy efficiency, cost-saving benefits, and citizen satisfaction. Community members are asked to participate by providing feedback on their perceptions of the lighting.

“There are a variety of new lighting technologies on the market with the potential to significantly increase the energy efficiency and decrease the maintenance costs for our community’s streetlights,” said Jason Bieri, Electric Supervisor.

Included in the tests are the traditionally used high-pressure sodium lights, two types of light-emitting diode (LED) lights, and one type of induction light. Compared to the older technology, LED and induction lights may provide more light that is clearer and more evenly spread, improving the safety of nighttime streets.

Light meters will be used to measure the output of each type; but feedback from community members is also needed.

“Light meter readings and visual perceptions can differ significantly,” said Melissa Moren, Energy Services Representative. “That’s why we’re seeking participants in an opinion survey.”

Citizens may click here to download the opinion survey. Participation involves taking a firsthand, nighttime look at the lights and providing written evaluation. The survey consists of 7 questions and should take 10-15 minutes to complete.
