Semi-Annual Fire Hydrant flushing begins October 1st (10/1/07)

Sturgeon Bay Utilities (SBU) will be performing its semi-annual fire hydrant flushing activities beginning October 1st. The work will continue for approximately 30 days and will be performed between the hours of 7:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

Fire hydrant flushing is an important part of Sturgeon Bay Utilitites ongoing maintenance program of the City's water distribution system. The first is to assure the fire hydrants operate properly in the event of an emergency. The second is to reduce mineral build-up in the water mains. Unfortunately, during this important maintenance procedure, the occurrence of discolored water can occur. Sturgeon Bay Utilities wish to thank all residents and businesses in advance for their patience during this important maintenance procedure.

It is important for everyone to know that discolored water can occur even when flushing activities are not in your immediate area. Residents are encouraged to check their water prior to routine household activities such as laundry.

Residents who experience rusty or dirty water should do the following:

  • Flush water piping using COLD WATER ONLY from a bath tub faucet for approximated 5 to 15 minutes, then all other cold water fixtures in the house for up to 5 minutes.
  • Check water before washing clothes.
  • Check water prior to running dish washer.
  • Check water before using for cooking.
  • If WHITE clothes become discolored, "Iron Out" is available at the local hardware store.

Questions pertaining to this or any other aspect of SBU's Water/Wastewater related service should be directed to SBU's customer service department at (920) 746-2820.
